Why Solid Floor Insulation Is Important for Your Home

Solid floor insulation reduces heat loss through concrete ground floors — improving comfort, energy efficiency, and thermal performance in homes, extensions, and ground floor rooms. Many properties with solid floors lose significant heat because the concrete allows cold temperatures to transfer directly into the living space. Insulating the floor breaks this heat-loss pathway.

Solid Concrete Floors Are Common In:

Modern homes built after 1960 — the majority of post-war construction uses solid concrete ground floor slabs
Extensions — almost all single-storey and two-storey extensions are built on concrete slab foundations
Ground floor rooms with no void underneath — including kitchens, living rooms, and utility areas
Older properties where original suspended timber floors have been replaced with concrete

❌ Without Solid Floor Insulation

  • Heat escapes continuously through the concrete slab into the ground
  • Your floor feels cold underfoot — especially in winter
  • Your heating system works harder to compensate for floor heat loss
  • Energy bills are higher than necessary

✓ With Solid Floor Insulation

  • Heat is retained within the room — floor is warmer underfoot
  • Your home feels more comfortable throughout the year
  • Heating system runs more efficiently — less energy needed
  • Typical estimated annual saving of £100–£200
01 — Benefits

Benefits of Solid Floor Insulation

Solid floor insulation provides significant benefits beyond warmer floors — improving energy efficiency, reducing heat loss, lowering energy bills, and creating a more comfortable living environment throughout your home.

🦶

Warmer Floors

Eliminate cold concrete underfoot and create a noticeably warmer, more comfortable ground floor environment. Particularly impactful in kitchens, living rooms, and rooms with tiled or hard floor finishes.

💷

Lower Energy Bills

Improve heat retention through the ground floor and reduce the amount of energy required to heat your home. Typical estimated annual saving of £100–£200 — actual savings depend on your property size, heating system, and usage patterns.

📊

Improved EPC Rating

Solid floor insulation contributes to an improved Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating — which can support eligibility for energy improvement schemes, improve mortgage rates on energy-efficient properties, and increase saleability.

💧

Reduced Condensation

Warmer floor surfaces reduce the risk of condensation forming at floor level — helping to protect floor coverings, skirting boards, and wall bases from moisture-related damage.

🔇

Improved Acoustic Performance

PIR insulation boards and the screed layer help to reduce impact sound transmission through the floor — a useful secondary benefit in properties with rooms above ground floor level.

🏡

Increased Property Value

A more energy-efficient home with a better EPC rating is more attractive to buyers and can support a higher property valuation — particularly as energy efficiency becomes a more prominent factor in the UK housing market.

03 — Process

Solid Floor Insulation — Installation Process

Our installation process is fully managed from free survey to final floor finish. The damp proof membrane is a critical mandatory step — installed on every project before insulation to prevent ground moisture rising into the floor assembly and causing damp problems long-term.

1

Free Survey — Floor Assessment

We check existing floor construction, current floor height, existing DPM provision, damp levels, drainage, and access. We confirm insulation specification, screed type, and final floor covering compatibility — then provide a fixed-price quote. No charge, no obligation.

2

Clear the Room

All furniture removed from the room. Existing floor covering — carpet, tiles, LVT, timber — lifted and removed. Skirting boards removed where required to allow for the increased floor height.

3

Prepare Existing Slab

The existing concrete slab is cleaned, levelled, and repaired. Cracks, holes, and uneven areas are made good to provide a sound, stable surface for the DPM and insulation. This step is critical for a flat, level final floor.

4
Moisture Protection Critical Step

Install Damp Proof Membrane (DPM)

A continuous damp proof membrane is laid across the full floor area before any insulation is installed. The DPM prevents ground moisture rising through the slab and into the floor assembly — a critical step that protects the insulation, screed, and final floor covering from moisture damage for the life of the installation. The DPM is lapped up the walls and taped at all joints. Omitting or incorrectly installing the DPM is the most common cause of long-term failure in solid floor insulation.

5

Install Insulation Boards

PIR insulation boards (50–100mm) are laid over the DPM across the full floor area. Boards are butted tightly together and staggered at joints to eliminate cold bridges. The insulation thickness is confirmed at survey to achieve the required U-value and to manage final floor height.

6

Install Screed

A screed layer (50–75mm) is installed over the insulation boards to provide a smooth, load-bearing surface for the final floor covering. Liquid (flowing) screed or traditional sand and cement screed — confirmed at survey based on room size, underfloor heating requirements, and timeline.

7

Allow Screed to Dry

Screed requires drying time before the final floor covering can be installed: sand and cement screed typically 1 day per mm thickness (up to 7 days for 75mm); liquid screed typically 24–48 hours walking strength, 4–6 weeks before final floor covering. Drying time is planned into the programme to avoid disruption to your schedule.

8

Install Final Floor Covering

Final floor covering installed over the dried screed — carpet, engineered wood, LVT, or tiles as agreed. Skirting boards replaced (deeper where required to account for increased floor height). Doors adjusted if needed. Room handed over complete and ready to use.

Installation time: Typically 3–7 days per room including screed drying time. Some rooms will need to be vacated during the screed drying period. For the whole ground floor, a 1–2 week programme is typical. We plan the programme to minimise disruption and keep as much of the home usable as possible.
🏠

One point of contact from free survey to final floor covering. We manage all trades, co-ordinate the screed drying programme, and hand back each room ready to use. No surprises, no hidden costs.

05 — FAQ

Solid Floor Insulation — Common Questions

How much does solid floor insulation cost?

Costs vary by room size and specification. As an indicative guide: 15m² (small room) typically £1,500–£2,500; 25m² (medium room) £2,500–£4,000; 40m² (large room) £4,000–£6,000; whole ground floor £6,000–£10,000. All prices are indicative guide prices — your fixed-price quote is confirmed at the free site survey and depends on room size, specification, and site conditions. ECO4 partial funding may reduce your upfront cost if you are eligible. Prices exclude VAT.

Can I get an ECO4 grant for solid floor insulation?

Yes — solid floor insulation can be eligible for partial funding through the ECO4 scheme. ECO4 provides funding support for qualifying home energy improvements in properties that meet the eligibility criteria based on household income, current EPC rating, and property type. You may need to pay a top-up contribution depending on your circumstances.

We offer a free ECO4 eligibility check — check your eligibility here or contact us and we will advise you at the free site survey.

How long does solid floor insulation last?

A correctly installed solid floor insulation system has a typical lifespan of 30+ years — effectively the life of the building. PIR insulation boards do not degrade significantly when installed in a correctly specified floor assembly with an appropriate damp proof membrane. The screed and floor covering above can be replaced or refreshed as required without affecting insulation performance.

Will solid floor insulation raise my floor height?

Yes — solid floor insulation typically raises the finished floor level by 100–150mm (insulation boards plus screed). This may require adjustments to internal doors (trimmed at the base), skirting boards (replaced with new), and in some cases kitchen units or fitted furniture. We discuss and plan all floor height implications at the free survey — confirming the insulation thickness, final floor height, and any joinery adjustments required.

Do I need to move out during solid floor insulation installation?

For individual rooms, you do not need to move out — you can continue living in the rest of the property while work takes place in the specific room. The room being worked on will be out of use for 3–7 days including screed drying time.

For a whole ground floor programme, you may prefer to stay elsewhere for 1–2 weeks while the screed dries across all rooms — particularly if the kitchen or main living area is being insulated. We discuss programme phasing at the free survey to minimise disruption.

How do I know if I have a solid concrete floor?

A solid concrete floor will feel completely rigid underfoot — no bounce or flex when you walk across it. It will not feel hollow if you knock on it. Most homes built after 1960 have solid concrete ground floors, as do the majority of single-storey extensions regardless of build date.

If you are unsure whether your floor is solid concrete or suspended timber, we can confirm at the free site survey — contact us and we'll check and advise at no cost.
